Tim worked on the background first using a watery mix of paints, letting the colours flow from different areas in order to create a more harmonious paintiing, and getting moisture on as much of the paper as possible, allowing the colours to mix and flow.

Tim used a basic palette of 12 colours. The main colours were Winsor Yellow, Naples Yellow, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Viridian Green, Ultramarine, Violet and Manganese Blue. He also used a white gouache mixed with Naples yellow to create a smoke effect.
